net-snmp up to 5.1.2 fixproc privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in net-snmp up to 5.1.2 (Network Management Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code of the component fixproc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

fixproc in Net-snmp 5.x before 5.2.1-r1 creates temporary files insecurely, which allows local users to modify the contents of those files to execute arbitrary commands, or overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack.

The bug was discovered 05/07/2005. The weakness was shared 05/24/2005 by Eric Romang (Website). The advisory is shared at zataz.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-1740 since 05/24/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 17 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19988 (RHEL 4 : net-snmp (RHSA-2005:395)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117853 (CentOS Security Update for net-snmp (CESA-2005:373)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20763) and Tenable (19988). The entries 1583, 2706 and 28140 are related to this item.
