Intel Pro Adapter up to 9.x Driver stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Intel Pro Adapter up to 9.x. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Intel PRO 10/100, PRO/1000, and PRO/10GbE PCI, PCI-X, and PCIe network adapter drivers (aka NDIS miniport drivers) before 20061205 allows local users to execute arbitrary code with "kernel-level" privileges via an incorrect function call in certain OID handlers.

The bug was discovered 12/05/2006. The weakness was shared 12/06/2006 by eEye Digital Security with eEye Digital Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at intel.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6385 since 12/07/2006. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at intel.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (30750). The entries VDB-180605, VDB-180606, VDB-183750 and VDB-198424 are related to this item.
