The coda_pioctl function in the coda functionality (pioctl.c) for Linux kernel 2.6.9 and 2.4.x before 2.4.29 may allow local users to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via negative vi.in_size or vi.out_size values, which may trigger a buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 02/15/2005 by David Coulson with Coverity (Website). The advisory is available at oss.sgi.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-0124. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21849 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2005:663)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117852 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:663)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
