Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2000, 2002, and 2003, in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3 and other packages, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Excel file with a malformed range, which could lead to memory corruption involving an argument to the msvcrt.memmove function, aka "Brand new Microsoft Excel Vulnerability," as originally placed for sale on eBay as item number 7203336538.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2005. The weakness was presented 03/14/2006 by Ollie Whitehouse with Symantec as MS06-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-4131 since 12/09/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21078 (MS06-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (905413)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90303 (Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-012)).
Applying the patch MS06-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
