Linux Kernel 2.6.20.2 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.20.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

nfnetlink_log in netfilter in the Linux kernel before 2.6.20.3 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via unspecified vectors involving the (1) nfulnl_recv_config function, (2) using "multiple packets per netlink message", and (3) bridged packets, which trigger a NULL pointer dereference.

The bug was discovered 03/13/2007. The weakness was presented 03/14/2007 with Kernel.org (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1496 since 03/16/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 37 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67495 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2007-0347)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156097 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0347)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33208) and Tenable (67495). See 2979, 3041, 3146 and 3293 for similar entries.
