Integer signedness error in emalloc() function for PHP before 4.3.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via negative arguments to functions such as (1) socket_recv, (2) socket_recvfrom, and possibly other functions.

The weakness was disclosed 03/25/2003 by Sir Mordred as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0166. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11468 (PHP socket_iovec_alloc() Function Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
