OpenBSD 3.9/4.0 ICMPv6 Packet kern/uipc_mbuf2.c mbuf memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenBSD 3.9/4.0 (Operating System). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is an unknown functionality of the file kern/uipc_mbuf2.c of the component ICMPv6 Packet Handler. The manipulation of the argument mbuf with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in kern/uipc_mbuf2.c in OpenBSD 3.9 and 4.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via fragmented IPv6 packets due to "incorrect mbuf handling for ICMP6 packets." NOTE: this was originally reported as a denial of service.

The weakness was released 03/12/2007 by Alfredo Ortega with OpenBSD (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openbsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1365 since 03/08/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/18/2017).

A public exploit has been developed in Python and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
