A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Netgear RP114 3.26 (Wireless LAN Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component URL Filter. The manipulation of the argument QUERY_STRING
as part of a Long URL leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Netgear RP114 allows remote attackers to bypass the keyword based URL filtering by requesting a long URL, as demonstrated using a large number of %20 (hex-encoded space) sequences.
The weakness was disclosed 05/23/2004 by Marc Ruef with scip AG as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vuldb.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-2032 since 05/04/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Marc Ruef in URL and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at computec.ch. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at netgear.com.Proper firewalling of tcp/80 & tcp/443 is able to address this issue. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Cisco, D-Link or 3com as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.
